BIO

Irish artist Deirdre McLoughlin was educated in Dublin by the Sisters of Charity in Mount Carmel Kings Inns St. A year in the Civil Service gave her the means to enter Trinity College Dublin where grants supported by her tutor Kadar Asmal saw her through. She passed her final exams in English Literature, History and Philosophy and travelled to Amsterdam.

In a studio on the Keizersgracht a lump of clay and an invitation to make something was, she did not know it then, to be her future. Between times in the studio making forms to an end she did not comprehend she acted in short movies taking classes in the Stanislavski method.

The deaths of the ten hunger strikers in DEEonTELEPHONELong Kesh brought her to a mental crisis. She came out of it knowing what she was and was not. She understood the shapes she was making in the studio were a language of expression. As a composer finds sound, a painter colour and a writer words she found form in clay and it was what people called art and it was necessary. Till this realization she could not answer the ongoing question, ‘why do you not make something useful’. There was nothing for it but to skill herself and to this end she went to Kyoto where the best in her field, the Sodeisha Group, were based.

McLoughlin has taught Irish to the Dutch and English to the Japanese, she has been a singer and a cleaner. She has acted as external examiner and lectured in colleges in Ireland, England, mainland Europe, Turkey and America. Exhibitions and awards follow her working path. She is based in Amsterdam with a studio in Xpositron, an eco friendly facility on the edge of town. She has said, “Everything I know is in my work, I don’t always understand what I know.”
